History[edit]

Quarterhill Inc., formerly known as Wi-LAN Inc., has a history dating back to its founding in 1992. The company's origin can be traced to Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, where it was established with a focus on intellectual property licensing and innovation in the wireless communications industry. Originally, Quarterhill/Wi-LAN focused on acquiring and licensing patents related to wireless technologies. The company became known for its extensive patent portfolio covering various aspects of wireless communications, including cellular, Wi-Fi, and other wireless technologies. Over time, Quarterhill/Wi-LAN expanded its intellectual property licensing activities to cover a broader range of technologies, including semiconductor manufacturing, memory interface technologies, computer gaming, and more. The company's licensing model involved entering into agreements with various companies, allowing them to use its patented technologies in exchange for licensing fees.[2]

In June 2017, the company underwent a significant rebranding and changed its name from Wi-LAN Inc. to Quarterhill Inc., reflecting its diversification beyond wireless technologies and its growing presence in various intellectual property licensing industries.[3] Beyond its intellectual property licensing endeavors, Quarterhill Inc. expanded its operations to include the Intelligent Transportation Systems segment, offering various mobility solutions and traffic management systems to address the growing demands of the transportation industry.[2]

The IAG comprises members from various states, collectively serving more than 36 million accounts and over 53 million toll transponders. Additionally, they handle the collection of electronic toll revenues exceeding $12.8 billion. In December, 2023 ETC initiated the operation of the EZIOP Hub, which all E-ZPass members are now using.[6]

The EZIOP Hub, which is cloud-based, facilitates the efficient exchange of transponder, license plate, and transaction data through a centralized interoperability hub connecting IAG members, third parties, and other Regional Hubs. This Hub enhances the ability of IAG members to offer a seamless tolling experience for their customers across state lines, with reduced time and effort compared to previous methods. Furthermore, the project allows for a flexible phased adoption of national interoperability standards, as outlined in the Enhanced Interface Control Document, paving the way for nationwide toll interoperability while also supporting the integrated mobility initiatives of IAG members in the future.[6]
