History[edit]

The National Bank of Greece S.A. (NBG) is one of the oldest and largest banks in Greece. Its origin can be traced back to its establishment in 1841 as a Greek bank with the name "Bank of National Economy" (Τράπεζα Εθνικής Οικονομίας) during the reign of King Otto. It was founded by a group of Greek businessmen and philanthropists with the aim of supporting economic development and financing various infrastructure projects in the newly independent Greek state.[2]

Over the years, the bank underwent various changes, mergers, and expansions. In 1899, it was renamed the "National Bank of Greece" (Εθνική Τράπεζα της Ελλάδος) and became a significant financial institution in Greece. It played a crucial role in supporting the country's economic growth and development during various periods of its history.[2]

The National Bank of Greece expanded its operations beyond Greece's borders, establishing a presence in other countries and serving as a bridge between Greek businesses and international markets. It became involved in diverse banking and financial services, including retail and corporate banking, investment banking, wealth management, and international trade financing.[3] Throughout its long history, the bank experienced various challenges and transformations, including periods of economic and political instability in Greece. Despite these challenges, NBG remains an important player in the Greek banking sector and continues to be an essential pillar of the country's financial system.[2]
